Not all
dog trainers are the same, and there are a myriad of different dog training
approaches out there if you've even done some basic homework on dog training
methods, you'll understand that, broadly speaking, there are two major ways
that dog trainers attempt to teach dogs on one hand you a more traditional
trainers whether heavy emphasis on special training tools that are designed to
physically correct dog.
There are
three main types of collars these trainers use Job chains from colors and
electric shock collars.
These
tools are specifically engineered to be unpleasant to dogs.
That's
because they rely. The principal called experiential avoidance that is teaching
the dog to avoid pain or discomfort.
For
example, if your dog jumps up you give them a quick firm yank or a shock around
the net to communicate no stop that anything that requires you to be this
forceful with your dog is beneath.
He was a
21st-century citizen. Of course this is the most basic, reactive and
ineffective way to teach a dog for long-term results.
Why
strongly discourage the use of these tools if you're an average person out
there using them. I understand that you're doing so because you took the advice
of someone that you trusted to give you good advice as you.
I want
you to feel judged. The point here is just to critically examine two competing
dog training a look who decided to wake up her second, even if your
professional dog trainer.
I'm not
saying that the way you teach dogs is a reflection on your personal character.
It's not about you it's about the methods.
That
said, if you are a professional trainer and you are advising the public to
teach this way. Understand that it is the goal of the dog training revolution
to educate your client base so that the demand for your services will be
reduced enough to keep your business from remaining viable.
The
public just deserves better advice than that's when you present trainer who
implements the use of these tools are usually quick to say that you just have
to use them properly.
Then
there were those of us who don't think there is a proper way to use pain to
teach a dog in an era where we have the best information to date on teaching
dogs that get better results without compromising the trust between a person
and their dog.
Since
these methods most often rely on a superficial collar.
You must understand that the moment that color
comes off the unwanted behaviors almost always promptly returned and it becomes
clear that deep learning hasn't occurred.
The dog
is only learned to comply because they're wearing the collar.
This is
why it is a rare thing to see these trainers ever take these colors off.
Even with
their own dog collars like this are just a patch and they're not really
compatible with long-lasting authentic teaching.
Furthermore,
it's just a pretty shallow way to communicate with the dog. Unfortunately, many
of these trainers lack a basic grasp of modern animal behavior principles
beyond punishment and reinforcement in the United States.
At least
the field of dog training isn't regulated so anyone can wake up and call
themselves a dog trainer whether we dog trainers like it or not we exist in a
scientific profession.
There is no room for scientifically illiterate
dog trainers advising the public. Nonetheless, this remains commonplace on the
other hand, there are trainers who do teach dogs without forceful methods.
These
trainers are usually more educated about more advanced teaching methods and
conditioning principles that rely on newer and better scientific information.
Of
course, many trainers will fall somewhere in between on the spectrum.
I
attribute much of my early success in dog training to really prioritizing the
bond between a person and a dog during the teaching process and every training
approach I implement revolves around that basic question.
Does this approach encourage a meaningful
loving bond between a person and a dog.
It's more
than just a feel-good philosophy to nothing achieves rapid results faster than
a great relationship some patience and consistency.
Raising a
dog has far more in common with raising a kid than it does programming a dog
with some gimmicky collar.
There's
only so much communication that can occur when you rely on a strategy of
corrections, devoid of lentic so this is what Ali looks like conscious see when
you and your dog are having a blast together training sessions are likely to
last considerably longer because number one restoration is a lot less likely to
be an issue for you or your dog plus neurochemicals are present in greater
quantities when training is enjoyable.
A good trainers going to remain current on the
latest science and ethics in our industry and you want to make sure that any
trainer you choose is well-versed in basic animal behavior principles.
Here's
one glaring red flag to watch out for with many traditional trainers. They are
virtually always at odds with the most cutting edge educated animal behavior
professionals and they are essentially asking you to accept broad absolute
beliefs largely based on superstitions, anecdotes, misinformation and even
metaphysics.
For
example, a super common myth that persists is that if you let your dog out of
the door before you if you let them on the furniture.
They were
somehow encouraging eight transfer of power to your dog so no no please you
okay you obviously achieve the upper hand in this relationship now.
Now there is no evidence for any of this
nonsense, saying we have it all figured out, but to believe these trainers are
advising you appropriately is to believe that some of the world's leading
universities and animal behavior professionals with far more education that
exist on the cutting edge of animal behavior are not as smart as your latest
pop-up dog training school telling you strap an electric collar or other metal
collar on your dog.
That is
what you have to believe if you were to conclude that punishment based training
methods are better and should be favored.
Any dog
trainer who insist that your dogs behavior problems or hyperactivity are somehow
due to some underlying dog human dominance or that you need to be pack leader
or the alpha, not the dog trainer for you.
So many of the governing principles adhered to
by old-fashioned traders, particularly issues surrounding dog to human
dominance, which is rampant in the dog training community have been so
extensively debunked that an informed person can no longer take these training
methods seriously.
In fact,
it is professional incompetence to continue to promote such methods.
Organizations
like the American veterinary Society of animal behavior and the Association of
professional dog trainers had very much come out against using methods designed
to exercise dominance towards dogs.
Since
these methods can have a whole host of side effects, not the least of which is
a deterioration in the relationship between you and your dog see dogs are so
much more than just instinctual beings who are either dominant or submissive
and are capable of extraordinary acts and deep complex emotions and thought
processes.
Modern
research is continually taking us in the direction of a more thoughtful
approach that takes into account our dogs intelligence their depth in 21st
century ethics.
Good
trainers understand that eliminating unwanted behaviors requires prevention,
accompanied by hands-on teaching over a period of time.
That's not to say that applying a harsh
correction will partially discourage unwanted behavior and punishing behavior
like this only addresses the symptom rather than the actual cause of the
undesired behavior.
I think there's a lot of confusion around this
because it can be really tough to get through to a young, athletic, super
energetic amped up dog I totally concede that, but they're such a simple way to
get past this and that regular exercise.
That's why
I always continually stressed that it's not realistic to expect a very
high-energy dog to retain new concepts until their overflowing energy has been
released. Ideally, just before training session.
If the trainers combating energy and trying to
teach basic obedience at the same time that they're destined for a more
unpleasant even more violent sometimes and ultimately far less effective
training session to me and many of you that is primitive.
One
method has you forcing a dog to do things while encountering resistance and the
other has your dog gladly willfully cooperating and enjoying themselves
inspiring your dog to want to do something from the inside out words rather
than forcing them from the outside in, is what works long term.
I have a
suspicion as to why punishment based training is pretty persistent methods that
rely on brute force are the most basic instinctual ways for us as people bend
animals to our will.
And while
there's no good sign, suggesting that dogs are concerned with applying dominance
towards people.
There is
overwhelming evidence that humans are very concerned with dominating animals
teaching a dog to control their impulses is central when raising any dog.
However,
it seems that teaching some people to control their future impulses.
That's a tougher thing to accomplish.
We spent
thousands of years domesticating dogs that were good at taking direction from
people.
We didn't
continue to bring the dogs that didn't listen to us. Let's take advantage of
this and build that depth will communication together.
This
single fact is what's most often overlooked by professional trainers when
teaching dogs.
So how do
we begin to turn the tide and show people that there are more intelligent ways
to teach dogs but that starts with those who have made it their profession to
advise the public professional dog trainers and the more educated we and the
public become the lower the demand will be for trainers who insist that harsh,
even painful method should be used only tell you guys a quick personal story
you might know that pet flow is my main sponsor here and when I was in talks
with them about working together and and promoting the company here on this
YouTube channel.
I requested that they make it their policy not
to sell choke on an electric collar's.
They were
all about it and that's significant because virtually all of the big pet supply
chain still sell these outdated tools for a company the size of pet flow to
take a stand like that on this issue.
Spoke
volumes to me.
